Protesters have delivered a petition to the world's largest social network, Facebook, to add women to its all-male board. The petition made by the protesters to the social network has 53,000 signatures and is asking for women in the board before its public offering.
The social network has come under fire for not including a single woman or a person of color on its board of directors. According to the research by Pew Research Center, female users are more than half of the 900 million users of Facebook. The protesters have been organized by the women's advocacy group, Ultraviolet. The group has collected more than 50,000 signatures on the petition through its site and a 'Face It' campaign. The founders of the campaign have put up an argument that the failure of the social network to include women and people of color into the board was against the goal of Mark Zuckerberg of creating a company that allowed people to "make their voices heard". ' Face It' founders, Alice Baumgartner and Alice Buttrick have written in the petition that the social network has an opportunity to demonstrate that it upholds the movement to bring about a change in the corporate boardrooms.
When Facebook joins the Fortune 500 group later this year, it will also enter into a group of 11.3% of the Fortune 500 companies which have all-male boards. Zuckerberg has categorically stated that he is blind to gender and that he only seeks out individuals that are useful to the company.
